Normal fill up

I update this blog when I fill up, so I try not to update this too often! No grand opening today, just a normal fill up at 91st and Huron. I usually fill up at Sam's Club, which is just across the highway, so I'm not driving out of my way to get E85.

The news said gas at over $92 a barrel this morning. Or was it $96? Who knows.

I went 228 miles on this tank of E85 so that was 12.5 mpg, it was all city driving. The price was $2.09.

Gale Banks is an expert with high performance. In fact, the man is a legend when it comes to turbochargers. He told Jay Leno the benefits of E85 here: http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/index.shtml?vidID=137216

I saw last week fuel was over 94 a barrel. I am in Missouri. I have been driving a 2003 Taurus and using E-85 about 80% of the time. Current price is $2.79 a gallon for gas and $2.29 for E-85. At first it seemed so stations wanted to sell E-85 as a premium fuel. Some at about .10 under regular gas. I don't understand the pricing but things are getting better since last year. I like this impartial blog idea. Care if I join in.

I am a big supporter of Ethanol and I have a question that has been on my mind. A couple of points to agree on first.

1. Ethanol produces fewer miles per gallon

2. Ethanol is a high octane fuel.

The question:

Could ethanol MPG be improved by lower displacement and higher compression?

Clarification:

Remember in the 80's when Chevy trucks first offered diesel engines. They were terrible. Basically Chevy took a gas engine and converted it to diesel.

Now we have gas engines that can run ethanol.

So I wonder if you had a smaller engine that produced equal horsepower (via high compression) to a gas burner could the millage line up a little better?

Glad to see your blog. I bought my wife a 2004 Ford Explorer last year so we could use E85. Unfortunately, we had no access to it where we lived. We recently moved to Northern Kentucky and that is all we use now. We are getting about 12 mpg around town but paying less than gas each week.
I have been using waste veg oil in my diesels for the past 5-1/2 years. I feel great knowing when we hit a real big fuel crisis, I will still be on the road.

I did a Tampa-Chattanooga round trip a couple of weeks ago in my 2007 Suburban. With 87 Octane gasoline, it runs about 20 mpg on the road. I was able to fill up with E85 twice (in Perry GA), which by my calculation brought my total fuel use on the trip to about 54:46 gasoline:ethanol. Average mileage was 18 mpg for 1450 miles. I was unable to get a good read on mileage with straight E85. The price in mid-October was $2.39-2.44, with E0 $0.30 more per gallon. The fuel cost per mile was $0.14 for the trip, compared to $0.18-0.20/mi for in-town on E0.

If I had a local source (Tampa Bay area), I would go out of my way to by nothing but E85.
